Okay maybe this should have been my first post, because it is about what I say at the beginning of my five minute time of listening to God each day.
Then again, I needed to build some groundwork first with the other posts, because I don't want this to sound like I am trying to manufacture an experience.
The exact wording that I tend to say at the start of the five minutes is, "Please come precious Holy Spirit and fill me afresh today so that streams of life giving water can flow through me bringing your life to people that I'm with today."
It is my invitation to God to be very present with me, so present that He fills my life with His life giving water.
When Jesus encountered the Samaritan woman at the well He said, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink', you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." John 4:10
The woman questions Jesus about how He is physically going to be able to get the water, and if He is greater than Jacob who gave the people the well.
He replies, "Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life."
The outpouring of the Holy Spirit into our lives when we receive Jesus as our Lord and Savior enables this 'fountain of water springing up into everlasting life' to happen. We are filled with God's Holy Spirit and His life flows through us.
It makes sense for us to be continually filled with God's Holy Spirit. "...be filled with the Spirit." Ephesians 5:18. In the original Greek the verb is present tense, and its meaning is an ongoing or repeated action rather than a one time event.
Which brings me back to my persistent encouragement to spend time listening to God each day, because it makes total sense to combine this time with being filled afresh each day with God's precious Holy Spirit.
This is not about seeking an experience, which is why I didn't start my blog with these thoughts.
This is a vital requirement of life in its fullness that we both spend time listening to God, and are also being filled with His Holy Spirit.
I believe this is the way we are able to respond well to His voice, by having the momentum of His living water given to us by His Holy Spirit. Then we can obey His commands, and share His life with those we encounter each day.
It makes sense to me!
God wants to be so present with us each day, and to fill us with His Holy Spirit.
